Small master bedrooms are THEE hardest to decorate. You’re trying to fit large pieces of furniture into a small space and it’s just not working. No matter which way you arrange that furniture, it appears crowded and cluttered. Sound familiar?
The big question: How do you even decorate a tiny bedroom?
When moving into our first home, our initial thoughts were, “Is everything going to fit in this small master bedroom?” It was a struggle until I figured out it wasn’t about the arrangement, but more about decorating the space to appear larger and brighter than it actually is.
8 Small Bedroom Essentials for More Space
I was super hesitant to buy white sheets. I NEVER understood why people bought them – especially when they have kids. Now, I completely understand. You can throw them in the washer with detergent and bleach and they come out looking brand spankin’ new! Not to mention, white bedding makes the room look brighter and bigger. Don’t believe me? I didn’t either, until I tried it myself.
One of my husband’s groomsmen bought these off our wedding registry (how sweet was he?!) And they couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for our tiny master bedroom. I love the design of them and they make the whole room appear more spacious and practical. Trust a gal that didn’t have side tables for years, it’s so inconvenient. You don’t want to stuff your room with more furniture than necessary, but these were a must.
This was another wedding registry gift from our sweet friends, Bill and Sarah. It is so worth the purchase of good quality items, rather than calling it a day with the cheapest you can find. The heavy duty wicker hampers are way more durable than the plastic. (For real though, I have both.) This cute wicker hamper even has a washable canvas cloth that you can throw in with a load of laundry. I love how a simple piece of cloth dresses up the whole look and modernizes it a tad more. The expresso wicker color will match the rest of the room, too. If that’s the style you choose to go with.
Something so cheap and simplistic can make a huge difference in a small master bedroom. I use this handy dandy over-the-door hook for hats and purses. I love how it saves closet space and I don’t have to look at a mess of a shelf.
In order to give the impression that our bedroom is larger than it actually is, I had to make it appear larger. One of the best tricks I learned (thanks to Pinterest), is to hang your curtains much higher than your windows. Long curtains give dimension to the small space. I couldn’t find the exact curtains that we currently have hanging in our room, but they are most similar to these thermal insulated ones here.
It seems totally silly that canvas storage bins make your bedroom look better, bigger, and more organized, but it works like magic. Major mom tip: when I’m feeling lazy and don’t feel like folding or cleaning, I throw stuff in the bins and create less work for myself. (shh!) Horrible isn’t it? Nah, I didn’t think so either. I use these for my leggings, tank tops, scarves, etc. These canvas storage bins are a huge help in finding clothing items in my closet.
If you haven’t installed a wall mount in your bedroom, I highly suggest it. We have created so much extra space by eliminating a tv stand. We purchased one that tilts vertically and horizontally, just in case we feel spontaneous and want to rearrange our room. With a small bedroom like ours, fitting a bed, two night stands, a large dresser AND a large tv stand was really impractical. My favorite part about the TV mount? They free up a ton of extra space AND most TV mounts are $20 or less. Way worth the money spent, if you ask me.
If you have a small master bedroom like us, you probably know that closet space is essential. Thankfully, when we bought our house and moved in, the closet organizers were already installed. I am so, SO happy we have them! I would definitely question whether we needed to remodel our bedroom to accommodate for closet space otherwise.
Tall curtains and beautiful curtain rods. Hang your curtains tall and wide when covering the window, it will make your bedroom appear bigger than it really is.
